Abington Township’s Board of Commissioners voted Thursday night to replace Flock Safety surveillance cameras due to data safety and privacy concerns, FOX29 reported.

The three-camera system’s replacement, Axon Outpost TAP Plan, was approved for a five-year contract, though Flock Safety’s current contract with the township runs through 2028. Police Chief Patrick Molloy said surveillance cameras have played a role in solving crimes and that the department is working with the township solicitor to see if the Flock Safety contract can be preemptively terminated.

Township officials will not reveal the exact location of the two new Axon cameras, but said that they’ll be placed in high-crime areas and can be moved as needed, according to FOX29’s coverage.

Last week, The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story about the company’s data security concerns. According to their coverage, thousands of the department’s searches have appeared in public data dumps on sites like HaveIBeenFlocked.com.
