Abington Township receives extension for Old York-Susquehanna Project construction

Construction for the Old York–Susquehanna Project in Abington has seen its share of delays, but the ball is still rolling.

“As soon as some easement-related issues are ironed out, but certainly by the halfway point of 2024, the intersection improvement phase of the Old York–Susquehanna Project, funded by state grants, will utilize some of the recently cleared property at the corner for the widening of Susquehanna and the realignment of the intersection,” Abington Township commissioner John Spiegelman said.

Demolition for four properties on the corner of Old York and Susquehanna Roads (1100, 1102, 1104, and 1106) began Monday, April 14.

Spiegelman noted that the grant money has to be used by the mid-point of 2023.

“We’re waiting for the negotiations and legalities regarding construction. We have a little extra time because we’ve managed to get additional extensions for the deadline,” he said. “The impetus for doing this right now is because we have to use the state grant money that is funding the project. We were awarded those monies a few years ago, but the pandemic delayed their use.”

Spiegelman noted that the Township has been negotiating with property owners in the area.

“Once all of that is approved, then construction can begin. Some of that land is going to be used to widen Susquehanna Road, align the intersection, and make sure that the proper turning radius is there,” he said.

“The improvements are going to happen. It’s just a question of exactly when,” he said.
