The Abington Police Department issued a statement on their website that on January 27, 2022, at approximately 4:00 PM, an attempted fraud took place on the 1300 block of Highland Avenue.
An elderly township resident reported that individuals claiming to be from a paving company knocked on his door and offered to pave his driveway with extra blacktop they had from a previous job. The crew consisted of four white males, one black male, one white female with long black hair and two children that appeared to be between 7-12 years of age.
When checking on the work work, the resident discovered that a larger portion of his driveway had been paved than previously discussed. When he told the crew to stop, they informed the resident that he owed several thousand dollars for the work that was already completed. The resident refused to pay for the work and because of the presence of a neighbor who was looking out for the resident, the subjects left the area.
The subjects were driving vehicles that included a white 4 door pickup truck with a utility body, a dump truck with Florida registration and a green Jeep Renegade with Florida registration.
The Abington PD believes the subjects were trying to defraud the elderly resident, as this is a common tactic seen used by transient criminal groups who tend to target elderly victims. Other common schemes mentioned by the Abington PD of this ilk include driveway sealing, tree work, and posing as public utility employees. Women and children are also used to gain the trust of the defrauded individual.
Anyone with information having information regarding this incident is asked to contact Abington Police at (267)536-1100.
