Abington Township commemorating 80th anniversary of D-Day with two events, President Biden in Normandy

Abington Township is commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day with two events today.

The first will take place at 10:00am at the township building, 1176 Old York Road, and will include a simulcast of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., followed by memorial reflections from Rep. Madeleine Dean and Rep. Ben Sanchez.

From the township’s announcement:

At 10 AM on June 6th, gather with us for an Operation Overlord (D-Day) 80th Anniversary Commemoration in the main plaza of the World War II Memorial, facing the Rainbow Pool. As part of the ceremony, WWII veterans and representatives from Allied Nations involved in the Normandy Campaign will lay wreaths at the Memorial’s Freedom Wall. This ceremony is a heartfelt tribute to the bravery of over 2 million Allied service members who participated in Operation Overlord and honors the memory of more than 225,000 Allies who made the ultimate sacrifice.

From Rep. Dean’s announcement on Facebook:

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we remember the unfathomable bravery of the men who stormed the shores of Normandy and turned the tide of World War II.

On June 6, 1944, then General Eisenhower wrote to the soldiers of the Allied forces: “The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.”

With courage and strength, they fought against the tyranny of Nazi Germany. They fought for freedom.

Today we honor their service and legacy.

After the event, veterans are invited to Rep. Sanchez’s District Office (1175 Old York Road) for a Veterans’ ID and Homeowner Event cohosted by Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg.

Abington Remembrance Ceremony

The Abington Remembrance Ceremony will be held from 4:00-5:00pm at the Edward R. Micciolo War Memorial Park at 1001 Old York Road. The event is sponsored by the Abington Patriots.

President Biden in Normandy

In related news, President Biden and key U.S. allies are in Normandy today to commemorate the 80th anniversary.

“What the allies did here 80 years ago, far surpassed anything we could have done on our own,” Biden said, as quoted by CBS News. “Together, we won the war.”
