Abington Township awarded LEED Gold Certification, ATFD seeking volunteers

Abington Township announced today that it has achieved Gold Certification through the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for Cities program.

From the township’s newsletter:

The LEED for Cities program measures sustainability performance at the jurisdictional level through the evaluation of nine distinct categories. Each category has a subset of metrics that are evaluated and scored, and together provide a holistic approach to sustainability by balancing social, economic, and environmental issues.

In related news, the Abington Township Fire Department is actively seeking volunteers. From their announcement:

The Abington Township Fire Department needs your help. The ATFD is the all-volunteer fire department that protects the residents, homes and businesses of Abington Township, and saves the Abington taxpayers millions of dollars each year. Every day of the year, regardless of birthdays, holidays or bad weather, your friends and neighbors leave their families to help protect yours. Now we need you to consider joining our ranks. The ATFD provides all of the training and equipment, we need you to provide your time and dedication. The ATFD is one of the only all-volunteer fire departments in the country to achieve accredited status through the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and we want you to become one of us. While we don’t offer pay, we do offer a lifetime of friendship and pride in helping your community. For those who are seeking a career in firefighting, many ATFD members have progressed to career fire departments with the training, knowledge and experience that they gained while volunteering with the ATFD. If you have been looking for a way to give back to your community, please consider joining the ATFD. For more information, please go to www.abingtonfd.org.
