Abington police win Wawa’s grand opening competition | Wawa at Bradfield closes for good | Remembering Roslyn Monumental Works

The Wawa at 2401 Susquehanna Road closed for good on August 24 at 8:00am, which coincided with the opening of a Wawa at 1331 Easton Road.

The grand opening event included a Hoagies for Heroes competition, apparently won by the Abington Township Police Department.

From the Department’s Facebook post:

We are the champions!

Thank you to Wawa for including us in the Hoagies for Heroes Competition at the new Roslyn location. Wawa’s generous donation will be split between Abington PAL and Citizens And Police Together!

A stone’s throw away, Roslyn Monumental Works opened at Susquehanna and Bradfield Roads in the early 1900s. The caption on the photo below reads:

The presence of two large cemeteries in the immediate area created a great demand for headstones. The company went out of business, and the lot was cleared for town homes in 1975. The Bierlin family also owned two greenhouses in the area.

The Hillside Cemetery, one of the large cemeteries mentioned above, is still located across the street from the Wawa. The townhomes which replaced Roslyn Monumental Works are catty-corner from its entrance.
