Abington police warn of phone scam involving fraudulent sheriff’s deputies

The Abington Township Police Department announced today that multiple residents have reported phone scams involving individuals posing as sheriff’s deputies.

“These scammers use intimidating tactics claiming that you owe money to the IRS or have an active warrant and demand immediate payment or personal information,” the department said. “They often use ‘spoofed’ caller IDs that appear to come from legitimate law enforcement agencies, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, to make the calls seem authentic.”

Victims of the scam are instructed to purchase Green Dot MoneyPak or other prepaid cards to provide the numbers to the scammers over the phone.

The department offered the following tips:

  • The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Abington Township Police Department will never call you to demand payment, collect IRS debts, or ask for personal or financial information over the phone.
  • Never give out personal information or send money in response to unsolicited phone calls.
  • Impersonating a law enforcement officer is a serious crime.

If you receive one of these calls or believe you’ve been a victim of this scam, you can contact the Abington Township Police Department immediately at 267-536-1100 or the Montgomery County Detectives Bureau at 610-278-3368.
