Abington police report uptick in thefts from and of vehicles, suspects sometimes armed

The Abington Township Police Department today issued a Crime Alert regarding increased thefts from vehicles and thefts of vehicles.

According to their announcement, the thefts have occurred during the late-night hours in Abington and surrounding communities. In several of the incidents, the suspects were reported to be armed with a gun.

Police advise residents not to confront anyone, and instead dial 911 immediately if you see or hear anything suspicious.

The department also urges residents to take the following precautions:

  • Always lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage.
  • Always take your keys or fob with you.
  • Never leave wallets, purses, or other valuables in your vehicle.
  • Never leave your car running while unattended or unlocked.
  • Park your vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible.
  • Consider installing security cameras or using motion-activated lights around your property.
  • Consider leaving your exterior lights on throughout the night.
  • Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to 911.
