The Abington Township Police Department commended Officer Janelle Hunt for her efforts in obtaining a firearm linked to an aggravated assault in Philadelphia.
According to the announcement, Officer Hunt conducted a traffic stop for a violation on July 19, 2025 at approximately 3:03pm. After making contact with the vehicle’s operator and two passengers, she reportedly smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and saw marijuana residue on the center console.
After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, Officer Hunt located a backpack in the rear seat that contained a handgun with a loaded magazine and an obliterated serial number. The suspect was then taken into custody without incident.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm was linked to an aggravated assault that occurred in Philadelphia in 2024, police said.
“As a result of Officer Hunt’s commitment to proactive policing and reliance on her training and experience, she was able to successfully remove an illegal firearm from the street, making a direct and meaningful contribution to the safety and well-being of the community,” the department said in a post.
