Abington police issue PSA regarding recent burglaries

The Abington Township Police Department is responding to two burglaries at the 1400 block of Woodland Road and the 900 block of Morgan Road, each of which took place within the last two weeks.

On Monday, Glenside Local reported on Police Chief Patrick Molloy’s advice regarding an organized theft group which targets high-end residential properties and is believed to be behind both incidents.

Today, Abington police issued a Public Safety Announcement regarding the group’s activities and ways in which residents can avoid future burglaries.

“The more eyes we have on it the more proactive we can be,” Detective Sergeant Troy Hummel said. “We’ve had criminal tourists within the last 14 days. We’re trying to work with the residents to keep them informed and keying in on some areas that are more likely to be hit. It’s been a team effort approach with Montgomery County detectives along with Cheltenham, Upper and Lower Moreland, and Upper Dublin police to share information.”

“It seems to be this time of year when these crimes seem to creep up. They’re usually opportunists that wait until the twilight hours and no cars in the driveway,” Hummel said. “Sometimes they’ll use a ruse of a pizza delivery person or a woman to go knocking on the door. If no one answers, they’ll close in on the target.”
