Abington police commend Sgt. Burgmann for apprehending suspect with marijuana, heroin, and loaded semi-automatic handgun

The Abington Township Police Department recently shared an Officer Commendation on behalf of Sergeant Daniel Burgmann for his efforts in apprehending a suspect driving with marijuana, heroin, and a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun in August 2023.

The suspect was subsequently charged with narcotics and firearms offenses, the Department said.

From their announcement:

On August 30, 2023, while on patrol, Sgt. Burgmann noticed a grey Acura with an obscured registration plate and darkly tinted windows. The vehicle attempted to evade Sgt. Burgmann, and upon closer inspection, the occupants seemed to be hiding something, as they were slouched down in their seats. Based on these observations and violations a traffic stop was initiated.

Upon approaching the vehicle, Sgt. Burgmann detected the smell of raw and burnt marijuana. Despite deceptive behavior from the occupants, who refused to address questions about the marijuana smell, Sgt. Burgmann, relying on his observations, impounded the vehicle and sought a search warrant.

After obtaining the search warrant, Sgt. Burgmann conducted a search of the vehicle, revealing marijuana, heroin, and a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun with an obliterated serial number. The firearm was discovered in a black plastic bag on the passenger side floorboard, while the drugs were recovered from a concealed compartment during the search.
