The Abington Township Police Department announced an officer commendation on behalf of officers Ryan Hasara and Janelle Hunt for their efforts in arresting a suspect on charges of narcotics and weapon offenses in July 2024.
According to the announcement, the officers conducted a traffic stop for multiple equipment violations, including heavily tinted windows, on July 12 at approximately 2:15pm. Hasara and Hunt told the driver that they smelled marijuana and saw drug paraphernalia in plain view, at which point the driver “became increasingly nervous and argumentative.”
The officers seized the vehicle and applied for a search warrant. A search revealed marijuana, marijuana packaging materials, a “ghost” handgun, and a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition. The handgun was found to have an illegal switch that converted it to fully automatic mode, the department said.
“This case highlights the importance of proactive policing and thorough investigative procedures in identifying and removing illegal firearms and drugs from the community, ultimately enhancing public safety,” the announcement said.
