Abington High School alumna to be honored…twice!

Professional Boxing Judge and Abington High School alumna, Carol B. Polis, is being inducted into TWO Hall of Fames in September and October. First, on September 29th, she is being inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Then, on October 3rd, she is being inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame. Polis holds the distinction of being the first woman professional boxing judge in the history of the sport.

Polis is receiving both honors this year although she is actually in the honoring class of 2020 for both halls; the ceremonies were postponed due to the Pandemic.

From Boxing News 24:

Polis started judging back in 1973 until 2009. She was the first woman to be granted a judging license from the New York State Athletic Commission. It is believed she was the first woman to judge a professional fight on February 19, 1973, with Philly’s Jimmy Young against Earnie “The Acorn” Shavers at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA, per Ring Magazine: Holiday 1999.

Polis is already a member of the Abington High School Hall of Fame, inducted in 1989.
