Abington grad, Hall of Famer, former spokesman for Abington Township receives honorary doctorate

Mark R. Weaver, a 1979 graduate of Abington Senior High School and a former spokesman for Abington Township, received an honorary doctorate at Kutztown University’s 2023 Fall Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, December 16.

Weaver received a Doctor of Laws. He previously received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration from Kutztown, where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant in the political science department.

Since graduating, he has become a recognized attorney and crisis communications expert. NBC News in Charlotte, North Carolina called Mr. Weaver “one of the nation’s foremost experts in crisis communications.”

He wrote the award-winning book “A Wordsmith’s Work”, in 2017, founded the Communications Counsel, and served as the Deputy Attorney General of Ohio, the Assistant Director of Public Affairs for the U.S Department of Justice, Public Information Director for a large Pennsylvania municipality, and Vice President of a national communications firm in Washington, D.C.

President Ronald Reagan appointed Weaver to be a spokesman for the United States Department of Justice in Washington.

He was inducted into Abington Senior High School’s Hall of Fame in April.
