The Abington Senior High School boys’ soccer team took home their first-ever PIAA AAAA State Championship on Friday afternoon at Northeastern High School in York County.
The Ghosts played West Chester Henderson High School to a 3-1 final score, which follows a 4-1 win against District 7 runner-up Seneca Valley High School in the semifinals. They finish 22-2-3 overall on the season.
The championship marks Abington High School’s third state championship across all sports. Boys’ lacrosse won a state title 41 years ago, and the boys’ basketball team won a title in 1974.
According to The Daily Local, longtime head coach Randy Garber, a 1971 graduate of Abington Senior High School, is stepping down from his position after 32 seasons at the helm.
“This is huge,” Garber told The Local. “It’s a long time coming and it means a lot.”
The boys arrived back at school after a parade through town with police cars and fire trucks, high school officials said in a post.
