Abington Art Center to host New Musicals Festival this weekend

The Abington Art Center in Jenkintown will host the Philadelphia premiere of the New Musicals Festival cabaret on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (March 22-24).

The free event will feature music from QUILL-adelphia, along with other new musicals.

From the QUILL-adelphia’s description:

Authored by award-winning 74-year-old playwright and lifelong Pennsylvanian Cindy Rock Dlugolecki, QUILL-ADELPHIA is uniquely Philadelphian in name and story. The musical reveals a little-known story of the Philadelphian who penned the original copy of the U.S. Constitution.

QUILL-adelphia has been a labor of love for Cindy since 2018, when she began researching and reading about Jacob and the 1787 Constitutional Convention. She started crafting the script in 2019 after buying dramatic rights to Arthur Plotnik’s biography about her ancestor, Jacob Shallus: The Man Behind The Quill.

QUILL-adelphia (formerly titled The Hand That Holds The Quill) premiered at Central Penn College in Summerdale, PA, with three sold-out performances in September 2021 and a matinee at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

In late 2023, Cindy entered QUILL-adelphia into a festival of new musical works organized by Theatre on the Verge, a theatre company based in the greater Philadelphia area. Over 70 musicals were submitted, and 20 or so were selected for full productions, concert readings or cabarets.
