Sheryl Lee Ralph, a Broadway star and Emmy-award winning actress who stars as Barbara Howard on ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”, spoke to a crowd at Salem Adult Citizens Center in Abington Township on Sunday, October 11, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
According to their coverage, the event was intended to boost Governor Josh Shapiro’s campaign for the midterm election in November. The event included speeches from Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, as well as Ralph.
“Black women, [Ralph] predicted, will help Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro win reelection this November,” the story states. “For Ralph, who is married to State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D., Philadelphia), Sunday’s event marks her latest involvement inDemocratic politics. She joined then-Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss reproductive rights in May 2024, before Harris became the Democratic nominee for president. She also spoke Parker’s 2024 inauguration.”
“Black women have been literally the backbone, the bedrock, the foundation of the Democratic Party for generations and generations,” Shapiro reportedly said. “And you have understood issues, and you have understood circumstances, and you have understood moments in time, even when a whole lot of other people didn’t.”
In related news, The Inquirer published today the following op-ed submitted by John Fisher and Susan Sommovilla of Elkins Park:
We were stunned when we opened the Oct. 7 edition of our Inquirerto find no mention or even a hint of reference to the significance of this day as the third anniversary of the horrific and despicable Hamas attack on the state of Israel. The most significant and brutal expression of antisemitism since the Holocaust was apparently considered unworthy of mention. In its recent history, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted 173 resolutions against Israel and only 80 against all other countries combined. The media, including The Inquirer, often cite the large number of deaths in Gaza without mentioning the genocidal Hamas’ refusal to disarm there. Antisemitism in this country and abroad swells while the media ignores the struggle of Israelis to maintain the only democratic Jewish state in the world.
