Elkins Park resident to compete in prestigious U.S. Kids Golf World Championship later this month

Evelyn Brillman, a 12-year-old resident of Elkins Park, has qualified for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, which takes place from July 30 through August 1 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

A rising seventh grader at Ancillae-Assumpta Academy in Wyncote, Brillman is one of five girls from Pennsylvania to compete in the annual event, dubbed “the world’s largest junior golf tournament” on the championship’s website. The schedule includes a Parade of Nations, a Parent-Child Tournament, Trackman Demo Days, three rounds of championship play, and a Closing Ceremony.

Following the three-day championship, the Van Horn Cup features the event’s top 12-year-old boys and girls.

Her mother, Jean Brillman (who happens to be the founder/owner of White Horse Coffee in Jenkintown), said her daughter began playing the sport about six years ago.

“She didn’t start super seriously. She was doing plenty of other activities around then, and over time, she came to love it. It was the only thing she wanted to keep coming back to. She loves the driving range. She’s a perfectionist, which a lot of golfers tend to be,” Jean said. “She’s a cerebral, smart kid and straight-A student. She loves golf because it’s not just athletics. She always says it’s a puzzle because no two shots are ever the same. I think that’s what has kept her interested.”

Jean noted that this is the last year that Evelyn can compete in the event, which invites golfers ages 5-12 from all over the world.

“Girls golf is something I’m always looking to promote because it’s still up-and-coming. We’re trying to get them recognized for what they do,” she said. “A lot of kids who qualify go on to play professionally or at D1 schools.”

Evelyn and her older sister, Eleanor, maintain an Instagram page called “2golfingsisters“.

“It’s kind of fun. They’ve gotten a lot of followers. I think they’ll eventually end up with separate pages once they get to high school for college recruiting purposes,” Jean said.
