Gov. Shapiro to serve on panel overseeing major technology and energy investments in Pennsylvania, Rep. Dean pushes back against U.S. State Department layoffs

Governor Josh Shapiro of Abington Township is participating in a panel charged with overseeing major technology and energy investments in Pennsylvania, CBS News reported.

Shapiro also attended Tuesday’s Inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, during which President Trump and technology and energy company leaders announced more than $90 billion in new investments from private companies for Pennsylvania.

Projects include the construction of data centers, an energy innovation center, a repowering of two 1930s-era hydroelectric dams on the Susquehanna River, and a $3.4 billion project to increase the output of Limerick Generating Station, a nuclear power in Montgomery County.

Shapiro said that his administration will work with the companies that announced projects, Pennsylvania Capital Star reported

“It’s important that these companies be on the record for what they want to invest, and then it’s critically important that they actually make the investments, and we’re going … to hold them to the commitments that they make,” he said at the summit, as quoted by Pennsylvania Capital Star.

“I think if anything, we’re doing a better job on public health and safety than ever before,” he told Pennsylvania Capital Star. “We’re just moving really, really quickly. So when we can promise speed and transparency in that process, that protects the public interest and it creates economic opportunity.”

Industry leaders like Alphabet President and CEO Ruth Porat, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Blackstone President and CEO Jon Gray, Gecko Robotics founder and CEO Jake Loosararian, EQT President and CEO Toby Rice, and Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman were all listed as panel participants, as well, CBS said.

In June, Shapiro announced a $20 billion Amazon Web Services deal to build two data center campuses in Luzerne County and in Bucks County on land formerly used by U.S. Steel. In February, the White House announced that Shapiro was selected to serve as one of 10 new members to lead the bipartisan Council of Governors.

In related news, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean of Glenside spoke out regarding the recent termination of 1,300 U.S. State Department employees.

“1,300 State Department employees — patriots — unceremoniously fired. Decades of experience, service, and knowledge gone,” Dean said in a post. “How does this make us safer? It doesn’t.”
