Cheltenham football evens SOL record at 3-3 with win over Truman, sophomore QB Jackson chasing more records

The Cheltenham High School football team defeated Truman High School 50-14 on Friday, October 18 to even their Suburban One League Continental Division record at 3-3.

Highlights from the game are below:

Record-breaking sophomore quarterback Kendall Jackson threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns, tying the school record of four touchdown passes in a game set by 2020 Cheltenham High graduate Adonis Hunter.

Hunter (below) passed for four touchdowns in a game twice during the 2019 memory-making season that saw the Panthers reach the 5A state final in Hershey. With 1,711 passing yards this season, Jackson is on the verge of becoming the third Panther quarterback and the first sophomore in school history to throw for 2,000 yards in a season.

Hunter passed for 2,217 yards in 2019, and 1982 graduate Gregg Caplan (below) reached 2,000 passing yards in both 1980 (2,025) and 1981 (2,000).

In related business, local historian Chuck Langerman shared that the Cheltenham football program recorded its only undefeated season in 1943.

The team played an abbreviated four-game schedule for a variety of reasons, but primarily due to World War II. They defeated Academy of the New Church 19-0, Friends Select 25-12, the George School 41-13, and Central High 13-7 that year.

The victory over Central High of Philadelphia was a major upset with future Penn State and NFL star Wally Triplett (top row in picture) scoring both touchdowns. Triplett would go on to play at Penn State and become the first African-American draftee to play for a NFL team.
