With Chelten Hills Drive recently in the news, local historian Chuck Langerman took the opportunity to share a few tidbits about the road’s history.
On June 21, 1934, Chelten Hills Drive was formally dedicated and open to traffic.
The $100,000 investment linked for the first time Wyncote and Elkins Park and formed a short route into Philadelphia from Glenside and other northern suburbs.
Pictured is 1940 Cheltenham High School graduate and field hockey star Betty Steinmetz with Township official Harold Carter Pike, CHS Class of 1910, looking on.
The celebration, in which several thousand participated, was followed by the dedication of Richard Wall Park, a 15-acre tract at Old York and Church Roads which became a part of the Cheltenham Township Park System.
