Jenkintown’s Deidre Grieves publishes illustrated children’s book based on NICU experience

A new illustrated children’s book by Deidre Grieves, a Jenkintown mom and journalist, is shining light on the emotional experiences of preemie parents.

“Small But Strong” is a story that acknowledges the challenges of caring for a child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It documents the highs and lows of prematurity – all while celebrating the miracles and milestones of this moving time.

Grieves gave birth to her first son, August, six weeks early due to an unexpected preeclampsia diagnosis. August spent over a month in the Andrew Tesauro Special Care Nursery at Jefferson Abington Hospital, and during that time, reading to him was the one act that felt normal.

“When you have a baby in the NICU, everything feels scary and overwhelming,” says Grieves. “You can’t always hold your baby, feeding is a challenge, and you never feel like you’re in control. But reading to my son made me feel like a parent – like I was finally able to share a special moment with him.”

Reading in the NICU has proven benefits. It can positively influence language development and reduce stress in premature babies. Reading to neonates also promotes bonding and helps parents feel a sense of normalcy and control in an otherwise chaotic environment.

However, there are few children’s picture books that thematically connect with what preemie parents are going through.

“I wanted to write a story that Philadelphia-area preemie parents can relate to,” says Grieves. “I want moms and dads to see themselves and their family in these pages and use the book to commemorate this important (yet difficult) time in their lives. If the book can provide hope and comfort to even one NICU family, I’ll be beyond thrilled.”

“Small But Strong” is now now available in paperback ($12.99) and a a hardcover version ($19.99) will be released on May 1. Photos can be downloaded here.
