76ers scrap plans to build a Center City arena, will stay in South Philly

The 76ers’ plans for their new arena, 76 Place at Market East, are being scrapped after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell got involved, according to an X.com post by Ernest Owens of Philadelphia Magazine

The Sixers and Comcast Spectacor will build a new arena in South Philly after more than two years of heated debate, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today. The Sixers’ East Market arena was slated to open in 2031.

The franchise also acquired a number of properties on the south side of Market Street that were slated for development as housing and retail. Ownership is still planning to “move forward with some of those projects, although details are vague,” The Inquirer said.

In December, Philadelphia City Council approved the original proposal to build a new $1.3 billion arena in Center City by a 12-5 vote. 1987 Cheltenham graduate Rue Landau was among those who voted against the proposal.
