Shareese Nelson and Zoraida Cordero of Cheltenham, Melissa Osborne of Upper Moreland and Marquita Bolden of Abington have each been named to the Montgomery County Commission for Women, a body of 21 appointees who advise county officials on women’s issues under two-year terms.
From their Mission Statement:
The Montgomery County Commission for Women represents the interests and concerns of women of all races, ages, ethnic and social backgrounds, religious convictions, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability/ability, and social circumstances.
The Commission advocates for the lives and well-being of women through building strong collaborations, sharing available resources, and educating and empowering women and girls throughout Montgomery County.
Additionally, the Commission:
- advises the Board of Commissioners, the Chief of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, County departments and agencies on needs of women and matters relating to discrimination, harassment, and prejudice based on race/ethnicity, ability/disability, age, sex/gender, marital status, sexual orientation, religion, and other categories of potential bias and discrimination against women.
- recommends programs, initiatives, and/or policies to ensure gender equality and wage equality, eliminate violence against women, promote opportunities for women (including but not limited to education, entrepreneurship, economic development, leadership), and honor women and girls in Montgomery County.
- provides a forum to help increase the interaction among County women, organizations, government agencies, and institutions working to improve the lives of women of all ages in Montgomery County.
“I’m proud to say that this commission is representative of the diversity of Montgomery County, geographically, demographically, and professionally,” Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairwoman Jamila Winder said in a statement. “The commission will convene to further our mission of empowering women and girls in the county by recommending policies and promoting programs that can reduce discrimination and bias, and exploring avenues to uplift women and girls in all fields.”
