Monday, June 19 is the 34th anniversary of the late George H.W. Bush’s commencement address at Cheltenham High School.
During his commencement speech, President Bush challenged the 331 graduates to refute those who speak of a “Me Generation” and to continue the tradition of volunteerism at CHS.
Cheltenham was selected for the presidential address because of its proximity to Washington—less than an hour by helicopter—and its outstanding academic and community service programs. It was viewed by Washington officials as an “exemplary school” and a “shining example of what is right in education.”
