Four Cheltenham seniors named National Merit Commended Scholars

Cheltenham High School seniors Christopher Brutschea, A.J. Gordon, Ronan Purcell and Toby Wasson have been named National Merit Commended Scholars, the district announced today.

Commended scholars fall into the top 2-3 percent of PSAT scores, which is about 34,000 students annually, and receive letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to recognize the significant academic achievement of scoring so well on the PSAT.

While Commended Students are not eligible to compete for the official National Merit Scholarship, they often become candidates for special merit scholarship awards offered by statewide agencies and corporate sponsors, the district said.

Brutschea plans to study biomedical engineering and is considering Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Temple University.

Gordon plans to study biochemistry or physics at Johns Hopkins University, Dartmouth University, Northwestern University or the University of Chicago.

Purcell is undecided on a major and is considering Haverford College, the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University or Swarthmore College.

Wasson plans to study computer science, art or linguistics and is undecided regarding her choice of higher education.

“The four were treated to Dunkin’ this morning in the principal’s conference room at CHS,” the district said in a statement.
